Glossop is a quaint town in the heart of Derbyshire, England and borders Greater Manchester – situated just 15 miles east of Manchester city centre. Nestled on the western outskirts of the Peak District, Glossop is the gateway for visitors to explore beautiful landscapes and enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, cycling, and climbing.

Glossop developed its reputation as a small market town in the medieval period – but saw a significant development shift due to the cotton industry’s growth in the 19th century.

Today, Glossop’s distinctive past lives on through its historic buildings and monuments, including St. James’ Church, a Grade II* listed building dating back to the 14th century, and the Howard Town Mills, a 19th-century cotton mill converted into residential and commercial properties.

Here’s what you can expect on your visit to a friendly town called Glossop

Glossop offers a variety of things to do for visitors of all ages and interests.

If you’re looking for a serene setting to enjoy your morning coffee (I recommend Twig Coffee!), take a stroll into Howard Town Park and perch yourself by the pond. Whilst you’re here, why not take a dip in Glossop Swimming Pool? The pool is on the park grounds – so you don’t have to travel far.

If you’re searching for showstopping scenery, a potter down the Longdendale Trail won’t disappoint. This walk is relatively flat and accessible for all the family to enjoy. The Longdendale Trail is the perfect route for those who love to cycle – its wide-set track makes it the ultimate playground for cyclists!

As you complete your route, enjoy the breathtaking views of the reservoirs flowing alongside the trail.

If you start your journey in the nearby town of Hadfield, you’ll have the pleasure of viewing each reservoir. You’ll begin at Bottoms Reservoir, which leads to Torside Reservoir, Woodhead Reservoir, and Rhodeswood Reservoir.

If you love the idea of a reservoir walk but fancy more of a challenge, Glossop is near the Peak Districts’ famous hiking spot – Kinder Scout. The dizzy heights of this moorland are not for the faint-hearted – but the views at the summit’s peak are worth it.

Kinder Scout takes gold for the highest peak in Derbyshire, so if you’re not one to shy away from a challenge – this is a must for your visit to Glossop.

If all that talk of walking has got you feeling parched – there are plenty of quaint countryside spots in Glossop to stop off for a refreshing tipple (or two.)

The Oakwood Pub in Glossop is a characteristic pub that offers a cosy and quirky atmosphere and outstanding service. If you’re stopping for a bite to eat, you must try their infamous tacos and loaded fries! They have an impressive selection of vegetarian and vegan options on their menu – and their indulgent cocktails are too good to turn down. If you’re fortunate enough during your visit, you can catch live music events, quiz nights, and other special events at The Oakwood.

If you’re looking for a truly traditional experience during your visit to Glossop – pull up a stool in The Globe Inn. This pub dates to the 18th century and offers an authentic and homely vibe – full of friendly local faces and welcoming staff. Their food menu is exclusively vegan – but the food is too good to turn down by anyone!

I couldn’t finish off without mentioning the legendary shop, Jakasta. If quirky and unique gifts are your things – this shop is for you. Become immersed in the divine aromas as you walk into this magical store. From candles to incense, ethnic ornaments to clothing, Jakasta is a staple stop-off during your Glossop visit.

There are too many incredible locally-owned businesses to name – but since most sit on the main high street, you don’t have to look too far to find a great spot.

I hope you have an incredible time exploring this beautiful town we call Glossop!
